Simple asset tracking devices that utilize satellites as their means of one way communications can last up to 2 or 3 years on one set of lithium AA batteries, depending on the number of pings per day that are sent back to an earth station and then on to the office. More pings per day equate to shorter battery life. Hardwired tracking devices can last far longer due to their independent power source. These relatively simple looking devices are meant primarily to locate or provide simple, pre-programmed one way data back to the OFS company through a provider of the services.
Historically, port environments have used asset tracking devices primarily for inventory control and equipment tracking. These same systems could be used to facilitate the flow of commerce through use in “green lane” programs designed to streamline cargo processing at the port of entry, as well as in land bridge initiatives that involve transporting, via roadway or rail, U.
