If you’ve ever wondered whether the neighbors are skinny dipping in your pool while you’re at work or if the baby sitter is mistreating your kids, the LukWerks Spy Camera looks like it will fit the bill.
It’s a spy camera disguised as a digital desk clock and controlled by software installed on your home Windows-based PC. It communicates with the computer over the electrical wires in your house but it doesn’t need to be near the PC. The spy camera video can be viewed anywhere in the world.
The system is easy to use. A receiver about the size of a pack of cigarettes plugs into an electrical outlet near your computer and links to the PC through a USB cable which allows your PC talking to the network. Then LukWerks software allows you to monitor the video coming from the clock, and as many as five other cameras if you need to monitor other locations in your home or business.
Two problems with the clock is that it is a little light, and the plastic construction should be stronger. The numbers used to display time are huge compared to my standard-sized alarm clock a detail that might draw the suspicion burglar who might suspect this as a spy camera in a clock.
The good news is that the surveillance spy camera is built around the HomePlug networking standard that allows data to be sent over your home electrical wiring. HomePlug is lesser known than the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless, but it works well for spy cameras like this that require AC power.
If you click the “find my cameras” button you see live video pop up on the software setup screen.
The images from this spy camera clock are clear at 640-pixel-by-480-pixel maximum resolution at 15 frames per second which is fine for video spy footage around the home. Color resolution though is not that good when viewed.
Also, this spy surveillance camera has no pan and zoom feature and a buyer must make sure the device is pointed in the general direction you want to view the most of.
You can quickly set up a Web page hosted by Wilife and view the spy camera live over the Internet. A username- and password-protected activity is used to control security for viewing.
You can schedule recordings for later viewing which is a great feature that can save time wading through hours of video footage looking for video surveillance to analyze.
The hidden spy camera in a clock has not been released to the public yet but will be available through GLC Enterprises in the near future.
