With online sales at a record $6.35 billion, there are a number of new and sophisticated surveillance tools CyberCrooks are using to get a hold of your money and identity and many other cyber crime exploits.
Identity thieves are now using electronic greeting cards as a means of delivering software that can steal all your personal information off of your computer. Now we discuss how these surveillance scam tools work.
1) Keylogger: This is software that tracks keystrokes typed on your computer keyboard. CyberThieves try to get you to blindly download this software and use it to record credit card numbers, user names and passwords.
2) Social Engineering: This is a fancy word for trying to trick people into clicking on something to get you to disclose personal information or download something onto your computer.
3) Phishing: CyberCrooks try to tempt you to click on a link to a web site in an e-mail. These link pages go to bogus sites made to look like popular e-commerce sites in the attempt to fool you in giving up your personal information.
These CyberCrooks will succeed in stealing your money and your identity in many cases because 74 percent of people do not install a hardware firewall and 53 percent don’t use a software firewall. And only 22 percent have installed a proper set of security software according to a Harris survey.
Here are some things to protect yourself from CyberSurveillance theft.
1) Purchase through well know retailers who you can contact by phone as needed.
2) Check for a little yellow lock at the bottom right of your browser window when making a purchase. This indicates a secure transaction.
3) Check bank and credit card statements often for suspicious activity.
4) Never give any personal financial information in response to an e-mail.
5) Do not click on links embedded in e-mail messages.
6) Use a separate e-mail address for online shopping.
7) Make sure your security software(Virus, Firewall) is up to date. If you go to Hot Spots using Wi-Fi, make sure this network is secure.
8) If you suspect that you have become the victim of a “Phishing” scam or identity theft, go to the Federal Trade Commission’s help site at www.consumer.gov/idtheft

Be assured that your shopping experience is completely safe. The order site is secured using a Thawte SSL Web Server Certificate which encrypts all data to and from the site. However, if you prefer to pay with check or money order, just choose the off-line option when you check out. |
