How To Report Vandalism To A Car

Sound familiar? About 11:01 a.m., on Wednesday, February 13, officers responded to a call for vandalism in the area of 91 Union Street. On arrival, officers spoke to the caller who stated that she parked her vehicle on Snow Street at 10:00PM, on Tuesday, February 12. When she returned to her car the next day, she discovered two flat tires on her car.

It is important to make a police report as soon as possible after you notice the vandalism. If the police do not come to the scene, you should take photos of the vandalism from every angle and make an inventory of anything damaged or missing from the car. We recommend you file a police report for any loss, but it is required that a police report be filed for certain losses as outlined in your policy. The police might not make your defaced car a top priority, but the information gives them additional data.

After the police report is complete, contact your auto insurance company to file an auto insurance claim. Once again, do not attempt to correct the vandalism until an insurance adjuster has assessed the damage.

Do not procrastinate when it comes to obtaining a police report and filing your vandalism claim. Many times vandals get away with the crime, but it is possible someone saw something or a camera caught the act on tape. It is nice when you understand your insurance policy and know you are covered against such violations as a keyed car. If you have any questions about your policy, the best bet is to contact your car insurance agent.

Take photos, file a police report, call your insurance company and see what things will cost. Depending on what they say and how much money you have either try a kit, or go to your local bodyshop and see what they say. If you actually have a bodyshop in the area you can trust (ask your friends if you don’t know one yourself) then they will know what needs to be done for the scratches and won’t charge you anywhere near as much if all they need to do is buff out the scratches rather than repaint.

Not only is this the process for dealing with vandalism, but it will create a paper trail that you can in turn use to help your claim. In addition, it may in a small way help to curb future vandalism in your area by giving police an idea of what is happening. Calling the police documents the damage. Make sure you leave the car exactly as you find it. Don’t clean up or disturb any potential evidence.

Additionally, your insurance company may ask you for specific documentation, such as a police report or personal statements. Your insurance company may also ask for receipts for any stolen items that are protected under Comprehensive coverage, like aftermarket car stereos. All of these items will help resolve your claim quicker, so be sure you have these readily available.

Filing a claim for a vandalized vehicle is much the same as any other insurance claim. Again, a police report is your first step, for it will document the damage and help verify your claim. Your next call is to the insurance company to file the claim, but you will to carry comprehensive coverage in order for the insurance to cover the costs of repair.

Sorry to say it, but unless you’ve got proof implicating someone the only reason to file a police report is if your insurance covers the damage. If not, you’re just wasting your time. I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

Prior to filing a claim with your auto insurance company, you should first contact your local police department. A police report should be filed regarding the vandalism, which will serve as part of the proof of loss needed for your claim. In addition to the police report, pictures should be taken of the damage that was done.

If the damages caused by the vandals exceed your deductible then you’ll want to file a claim. The first step is to create evidence of your damages by taking pictures of the car and any mess in the surrounding area. You can also document what time you last saw your car before it was vandalized and what time you found the car had been vandalized as well as any other details that may be relevant.

Your decision to file a claim for damages caused by vandalism will depend on the amount of damages that were caused and your deductible. Since auto insurance deductibles are per incident and not per year, there is no benefit to filing a claim with costs that will be covered completely out-of-pocket since it falls within your deductible. So if vandals threw eggs at your car and the only financial damage incurred was by paying for it to be detailed, it would not be worthwhile to file a claim.

Graffiti or tagging is a form of vandalism used by tagger groups or gangs to mark territory, send messages or threaten other groups.

Your policy may also require you to take steps to protect your vehicle from any further loss after it’s been vandalized. For instance, if a window was broken, you should cover it as soon as possible to prevent further damage. Often, your insurance company will pay for the steps you take or the materials you use — as long as the expenses are reasonable.

Typically, you will pay your deductible to the body shop at the time of your repair. How much your deductible is depends on how you setup your insurance policy at the time you added the vehicle. Definitely check into how much your deductible is before you get your repair done. You do not want to be shocked when you go to pick up your vehicle. It is possible to have a zero deductible depending on what your insurance carrier offers and your selection.

If you know anyone that is beating someone else’s car, stop what you are doing, and call the police, are tell someone near you. That person could have worked very hard on that vehicle. It could be a Hummer, or a truck. What if that person is very poor, has a low income, or makes little money every year? Someone could be very upset with what you’ve have done.

Also, while you should wait for a claims adjuster to assess the damage, you don’t need to wait to protect your car from further loss. In general, once the police have taken the evidence they need from your vehicle and have given you the OK to move your car, you should take steps to prevent any further damage or loss to it. Your claims adjuster most likely will provide a damage estimate after this.
