Anonymous husband writes: I am soon to be a single father. My soon to be ex-wife and I owned a Subway restaurant. I work in the marketing industry and only have a working knowledge of computers; She was very good at it. When she left the house, she still was able to enter my home PC, and I think she installed a Keylogger program on the family computer. Because of this, I can’t do anything on my computer at home anymore, and was wondering if there is any way to check for a Keylogger and delete it from my computer.
Keylogger’s are a common form of software and hardware that are used to keep track of everything a user does on a PC. Essentially, every button you press is recorded to a file, which the spy can then access at a later time. All your passwords, and everything else you type, is accessible by the person who installed it. Pictured here is a USB 2MB Keystroke Keylogger. All text data typed on the USB keyboard will be captured and stored on the internal flash drive is a special file.
Some Keylogger like the 2MB Keyshark PS/2 Keystroke Keylogger Plugs in between your keyboard and computer and records all keystrokes including passwords and special characters. Data is retained even during system lock-ups and power outages.
Other variants like PC Pandora is not a hardware device but it’s all in the software which captures every key typed on your PC. This is an incredible tool, because it captures all keys pressed including any text that is normally hidden, such as passwords. With this information, you can now gain access to ALL of your child’s online email services like hotmail, yahoo and Gmail, and any accounts at MySpace or other social networks.
As you can likely tell, keyloggers represent one of the most serious forms of spyware on a PC, but they are hardly unbeatable except for PC Pandora which has military encryption which makes.
First, most spyware detection and antivirus software should be able to uncover their presence and remove them. If you suspect a Keylogger is on your PC, update your antivirus software of choice and give it a full run. Also try a sampling of other spyware killers: Our current favorites are Ad-Aware and Spyware Doctor. Both are free (the latter if you get it as part of the Google Pack).
Also, and this is critical, check out your computer for any hardware you didn’t connect yourself. Many hardware keyloggers look like thumbdrives and connect to either your USB or keyboard port, often between your computer and your keyboard cable. The device does all the recording and the computer spy simply collects the device at a later time to access your keystrokes stored on a memory card.
Spyware detection software may not uncover these devices. They can be very small and hard to detect, and there is nothing you can do if she installed PC Pandora. It is virtually undetectable!
If you detect nothing in your spyware hunt but still suspect you have a Keylogger (or if you find the Keylogger software but are unable to remove it), your best bet is to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. It’s a pain in the ass and requires some technical know-how, but you’re better safe than sorry when your wife may be spying on your every move.
Anti-spyware tools are not perfect and can miss infections. I’d rather advise you to spend a weekend reinstalling software on your computer than potentially give up all your person thoughts to someone who might use them against you.
