Nanny abuse is not common or typical, but it does happen. I understand that some moms have to work and when/if I go back to work, I’ll be using a daycare with a live cam. As far as nanny abuse cases, true, there are many cases of abuse every day, by many different people. Nannies, parents, teachers, priests, etc. and it is very very sad. Sad too are the many cases that involve unfounded accusations.
One example of nanny abuse in Kuwait is when The Lions Roar interviewed Alma Antiole Balayoung. The Lions Roar found out that Balayoung came to Kuwait from the Philippines eight years ago to work as a nanny for a family of three. Balayoung was one of the nannies in Kuwait who was abused severely, but did not harm others. She was left with molted scars on her thigh, after she was burnt with an iron by her employers. Although Balayoung was deeply affected by the abuse that she faced every day, she waited patiently and put her needs before her emotions. “I didn’t do anything, I just begged them (her employers) to return me to the embassy, but they refused. ” said Balayoung.
My children were a victim of nanny abuse. Never again since I now use visible nanny cams around the house that the sitters know about.
No one said that nannies turn to violence because they are underpaid. That’s ludicrous. We hear of one nanny abuse story maybe two a year, versus the hundreds of cases of parental abuse. Like the previous poster stated, any idiot with a womb can become a parent. The PP mentioned that many parents don’t know how to go about hiring a nanny, so they just pick some random woman who has ok credentials. I don’t know the background on this family, but I think this woman was more of a babysitter than a nanny. Where are all the stories of the nannies who love and cuddle with their charges? I assure you, you will find WAY more of those.
By the way, ABC News seems to really like nanny stories. Check out this one from 2007 on parents struggling with their sitters about “whose child is it, anyway? “, and this one from a couple of months back on nanny abuse. These are essnetially unilluminating stories that don’t help the majority of working mothers achieve better work/life balance, treat their sitters with more compassion, or make more senes of their own situations.
Factors generally considered in choosing a nanny cam include price, control settings, quality of recording, viewing options, how many cameras will be installed and how elaborate of a camera disguise is needed. Although instances of nanny abuse may be unpredictable, the many reports that have surfaced through the publicity surrounding nanny abuse cases have revealed some consistent patterns. A babysitter who is a young teen may not be able to control feelings of frustration to the same extent as an adult. However, an adult babysitter may hold back an angry outburst until the person thinks it is safe to vent, and that person may have some good ideas of where to find a safe venting place is in your home. This is why venders are offering ever more clever disguises for nanny cams.
