Security lighting is a term that usually refers to a light mounted on the front of your home that either turns on by a motion detector or turns on from dawn to dusk. However, any light added to the outside of your home can function as a security light. A well-lit outdoor space is a great deterrence because burglars and intruders do not like to be seen, for obvious reasons.
Keep your home and family safer with motion sensing security lights. Ultimately, your individual circumstance will determine the type of security lighting you choose. A solar-powered, motion-activated security light may work well for someone in a sunny, city environment. However, that setup may not work for someone in a more overcast climate with outdoor pets because the animals could constantly trip the lights or the sun may not be out enough for the lights to collect enough power.
Burglars and intruders like darkness because it keeps them hidden. Security lights act to rob them of that advantage. When someone triggers the motion detectors, an outside security light will flood your yard with brightness, eliminating shadows and encouraging the intruder to move on. They’re also handy when you come home late at night, so you don’t have to fumble with the keys in the dark. Outside security can be fine tuned so as not to react to smaller pets and wild animals.
Other lights may be activated by sensors such as passive infrared sensors (PIRs), turning on only when a person (or other mammal) approaches. PIR activated lamps will usually be incandescent bulbs so that they can activate instantly; energy saving is less important since they will not be on all the time. PIR sensor activation can increase both the deterrent effect (since the intruder knows that he has been detected) and the detection effect (since a person will be attracted to the sudden increase in light). Some PIR units can be set up to sound a chime as well as turn on the light. Most modern units have a photocell so that they only turn on when it is dark.
Street lights are the most basic city-provided security lights – they provide basic lighting for streets and neighborhoods, in addition to home lights. But real security lights begin on your property. Many people opt for ground level lights that cast light up against the home, lighting up trees and architectural details. These lights can give an impressions of occupation, but they really don’t provide any additional security.
Motion-sensing security lights adjust in lots of ways, so carefully read the instructions that come with the light. You may be able to adjust the distance at which it detects motion, as well as the amount of motion (called sensitivity) that triggers the light, and the amount of time the light stays on once tripped. Aim the sensor toward the area where you want the light to “see” movement. Ask a helper to walk through the sensor’s field of view. This may take some adjustment over several nights: raccoons kept triggering our lights until we gradually raised its sensitivity setting.
Motion-sensing security lights come in a lot of styles, from decorative coach lights with fixed motion-sensing elements to utilitarian floodlights with adjustable motion-sensing elements mounted on an arm. First decide if you want a fixed or adjustable motion-sensing element, then choose a light style that suits your taste.
Installing outdoor security lights are a wonderful way to deter criminals. Outdoor motion lights are particularly good as they flip on as soon as someone starts to approach your home.
You want to really mess up criminals? Put lights on a 10 second flash. 10 on, 10 off. 10 on, 10 off. First it’s annoying, but more importantly, it will keep them pretty blind – their eyes won’t be able to adjust to the light or the dark.
Lights can and do deter crime, especially violent crime. If an area’s well lit, a perspective burglar, molester, etc, is more likely to be frightened off because they stand a better chance of being noticed. Also, that’s why the common advice for being out late at night is to stay on the well-lit main streets, and not to go up a dark side street, alleyway or hallway, because a criminal will be only too happy to follow you.
