Chicago has installed many spy cameras in their buses to improve security in city buses.
Now the city of Chicago is set to install streaming video technology to further improve surveillance and security. In December, 2006 the CTA installed wireless transmitters in 40 buses and select rail stops. These transmitters will be linked to laptop computers and monitor CTA security vehicles ad the command center.
The 2.4 millions project was prompted by recent bombings in London’s buses. The data will be transmitted over a new wireless network. Surveillance images from spy cameras on board the buses can be viewed within 600 feet of the bus, giving security personnel better and more up-to-date information about what may be happening.
Each bus is fitted with an internal and external spy cameras which in addition to surveillance can be used to space buses between stops and provide better service.
After the six month test, officials hope to expand the spy camera system throughout the whole city.
The major reason Chicago is using the mass spy camera system is because of two mass-transit incidents in Europe causing wide spread security concerns. train bombings in Madrid left 191 people dead and injured greater than 1,700.
