Physically, Spy Ball is essentially a wireless network camera on a two-wheel base. Using the latest wireless and video technology, the streaming video and audio (not done at the same time) from the camera is sent back to a computer and displayed on the user’s hand held game console or a home PC. Additionally, a user can control Spy Ball from a remote location. The ball camera is designed to take seamless, spherical panoramic photographs that capture every feature with equal clarity. Thrown in the air, the camera captures an image as the highest point of its flight for the split second it is stationary between rising and falling.
The camera ball can capture dynamic scenes without producing ghosting. The image can then be downloaded, viewed and manipulated on a spherical panoramic viewer installed on a computer. The ball camera uses 36 fixed-focus 2 megapixel mobile phone camera modules. The camera modules are mounted in a robust, 3D-printed, ball-shaped enclosure that is padded with foam and handles just like a ball. Our camera contains an accelerometer which we use to measure launch acceleration. Integration lets us predict rise time to the highest point, where we trigger the exposure.
After catching the ball camera, pictures are downloaded in seconds using USB and automatically shown in our spherical panoramic viewer. Well for starters, the ball camera has 36 cellphone cameras stored inside. The modules are set in a 3D-printed, ball-shaped enclosure that is padded with green foam (as pictured). The cameras are independently capable of producing 2 mega pixel images. Once the ball reaches height the accelerometer is used to launch acceleration giving it the ability take full spherical panorama shots. Afterwards, you can transfer your photos to your PC to view.
