The call ended with someone telling people in the car to hold on and pray, followed by a woman’s scream. During those 20 minutes, Sikes had the presence of mind to take out his cell phone and place an emergency call but it didn’t seem to occur to him to put the car into neutral! When interviewed afterwards on video he never mentioned it.
Before the crash, the driver called 911 to report that the gas pedal was stuck and that the car was going 120 mph. Investigators are trying to determine whether a floor mat played a role in the accident. On them, a Prius’ braking might pause when the car shifts from its traditional hydraulic brakes to an electronic braking system. Alert a defective products attorney or a car accident lawyer with Jim S. Adler & Associates, and let them battle for you in the legal arena.
The runaway car was traveling at more than 120 mph (193 kph) when it hit a sport utility vehicle, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and burst into flames. One of the family members called police about a minute before the crash to report the vehicle had no brakes and the accelerator was stuck. I have driven these cars and you can turn the key off and you can shift into neutral “N”.
The worlds number one automaker will halt production of certain models starting next week, until they can straighten out their issues with sticky gas pedals in these cars that can make them accelerate without warning. Last week, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles for this same problem, and an even larger recall of 4.2 million vehicles occurred in September.
Toyota says a lever that makes up part of the accelerator can potentially stick, causing the car to accelerate out-of-control and crash. Notices are going out asking owners to remove the driver-side floor mats while Toyota researches a longer-term fix. The recall follows a crash near San Diego in August in which an off-duty highway patrolman and his family were killed when the accelerator pedal in the Lexus ES 350 sedan in which they were riding, became stuck and they were unable to shut off the car or switch the transmission into neutral. It may take a 3 second push and hold to shut off the engine, which may be difficult if you’re in a panic situation where you may be hitting the on/off button repeatedly. It’s too late, in 3 seconds your dead!
Riding your brakes will only result in your lack of ability to stop your car So if your car’s throttle un stick you can stop or if your smart enough to turn your key off or put it out of gear. Consumer Reports found the system in both models worked as indicated, with pressure on the brake causing the car to ignore the input from a simulated stuck throttle. Consumer Reports also tested two vehicles without such an electronic safety feature, a Toyota Venza and a Chevrolet HHR.
In the meantime, Toyota asks that owners of these vehicles take out any driver’s floor mat and not replace it with any other mat. The letter advises owners that if they are to leave mats in the car, they should make sure they have the right-sized floor mat and that it’s properly installed. If faced with a stuck accelerator, Toyota advises owners to apply the brakes steadily and firmly, without pumping the brakes, and to shut off the engine at the earliest safe opportunity. The dealer could reimburse the former Toyota owner for any equity they still had in the car. The former Toyota owner could then get a tax break if they chose to purchase a new car from one of the American companies that the tax payers bailed out.
The recall is voluntary, meaning that owners need not have their cars updated if they are satisfied with the brake feel . While awaiting Toyota’s notification, NHTSA urges owners to remove all removable driver’s side floor mats and not replace them until their vehicles have received the remedies being provided by Toyota.
Toyota proclaimed that there have been detached accounts of sticking accelerator mechanics within a few of the Toyota vehicles. If there’s no flooring mat up in situ that accelerates, foot pedal could actually stick. He was adamant then, and now, that there was a fault on the pedal sticking but Toyota didn’t want to listen.
If you’ve ever driven a Prius you would know those brakes could stop an 18-wheeler. There’s no reason a grown man can’t stop a Prius. Toyota recommends that drivers experiencing this problem immediately contact their nearest Toyota dealer. The driver said they had no brakes. All four family members died from the crash they had while on the phone with 911.
More people who own a Toyota need to document the events leading up to a crash or death as a result of their runaway Toyota.
